I can't see the remote desktop

You go looking for your Cloud OBS server’s Desktop tab and it isn’t there, or you open it and it never connects.

  1. Your plan. This is the number one cause by a mile. OBS Basic doesn’t include remote desktop: the tab doesn’t even show up. It’s on OBS Standard and OBS Pro. If you try to open it, the dashboard says “Your plan does not include remote desktop access.” See Plans and pricing.
  2. The server has to be on. If it’s off you’ll see “The server is not online. Start it and try again.” Hit Turn on and wait.
  3. And ready, too. Freshly turned on, it can take a little longer to accept the desktop: “The remote desktop is not ready yet. Try again in a moment.” Wait and go back into the tab.
  4. Reload the server list if you see “Server not found.”: you’re looking at a server that no longer exists.
What you see What it means What to do
There’s no Desktop tab Your plan is OBS Basic Change plan, or use Control and Scenes
“Your plan does not include remote desktop access.” Same thing, when you try to open it Change plan
“The server is not online. Start it and try again.” The server is off or suspended Turn on, or check Billing
“The remote desktop is not ready yet. Try again in a moment.” It has only just started Wait a moment and retry
“The remote desktop is unavailable. Try again in a moment.” A one-off glitch while connecting Hit Reconnect
“Connection lost” The session dropped Hit Reconnect; it usually comes back on its own

Every now and then we update the platform, and that cuts open desktop sessions. You’ll see “The remote desktop connection was interrupted.” and the dashboard reconnects on its own. You don’t lose anything that’s in OBS: it’s only the view, not the server.

If you were broadcasting, this doesn’t stop the broadcast.

  • Turn the device. The dashboard reminds you: “Rotate your device or go fullscreen for a better view of the desktop.”
  • Use Fullscreen: in portrait, the desktop is too small to hit OBS menus accurately.
  • For everyday things (switching scene, starting and stopping the stream, touching the audio) you don’t need the desktop: Control works far better on a phone. See Control from the browser.
