SRTLA on a single connection

SRTLA spreads your stream across several connections at once. With just one there’s nothing to spread: if that connection fails, your stream drops exactly as it would with SRT, only with one more piece in the way. It’s the setup behind most SRTLA drops, which is why the dashboard warns you.

If you’ve been streaming over SRTLA for a minute and only one connection is reaching us, you’ll see it in two places:

  • The Live signal card shows “You are on SRTLA with a single connection”. It goes away on its own as soon as the second connection arrives.
  • The bell gives you the same warning, once per stream.

It’s only a warning: your stream keeps working. While you stream over SRTLA, the card also shows, next to SRTLA, how many connections are reaching us.

A connection with no data doesn’t count: a Wi-Fi without internet or a SIM without coverage stays out of the mix even if your phone shows it as active.

That’s the real fix. If you can, put the second one on a different carrier: that way it’s rare for both to drop at the same time.

  • Moblin: with an srtla:// URL, Moblin uses every connection your phone has at once. Keep mobile data on and also join a Wi-Fi (another phone’s hotspot works), or add another phone with Moblink.
  • BELABOX: plug in a second modem or a second SIM and check that both are contributing, as explained in Broadcasting with BELABOX, under Checking that bonding is adding up.

Once the card says 2 connections, the warning goes away.

If you’re only ever going to have one connection, SRT gives you the same with one piece less:

  1. In Stream Keys, set your key’s Protocol selector to SRT.
  2. Copy the new URL with Publish and paste it into your app: it now starts with srt://.
  3. Raise your app’s SRT latency to 2000–3000 ms. On a mobile network, that buffer is what gives lost packets time to be recovered. In Moblin it’s on the same SRT(LA) screen as Big packets: the path is in Broadcasting with Moblin.
