Broadcasting with Larix Broadcaster

By the end, Larix will be broadcasting to your stream key and you’ll see it on Streaming in the dashboard.

You need: any plan with a stream key · Larix Broadcaster on iOS or Android · 5 minutes

Before you start

Larix speaks RTMP and SRT, but it doesn’t do bonding: it broadcasts over a single connection. If you move around with two SIMs, use Moblin or BELABOX with SRTLA. For everything else, SRT is the sensible option on mobile and RTMP the simplest one on stable wifi. Compare them in Choosing a protocol.

Steps

1. In the dashboard, open Stream Keys and set the Protocol selector to SRT (or to RTMP).
2. Hit Publish to copy the URL.
3. In Larix, open the connection list and create a new one.
4. Give it a name and paste the whole publish URL into the URL field.
5. Depending on the protocol:
   • SRT: the URL already carries your key inside the streamid. If Larix asks for the stream id in a separate field, type publish: followed by your key.
   • RTMP: the URL already ends in your key. Nothing else to fill in.
6. Save the connection and leave it as the active one. Broadcast to one connection only: there’s no multistream.
7. Set up video in Larix’s settings: resolution, fps and bitrate. Keep the bitrate below your plan’s cap.
8. Start broadcasting. In the dashboard, the key goes from No signal to Streaming and the Live signal card shows the Current bitrate.

Settings for your plan

The key cap is the maximum it accepts, not the target. On mobile, stay under it and you’ll save yourself half the scares.

Note

If you’re feeding a Cloud OBS, what goes out of it towards your platform has its own cap, which isn’t the key’s: see Going out to your platform. Pushing more resolution than the Cloud OBS is going to put out improves nothing.

Not working?

Larix retries forever and the dashboard stays on No signal. The URL isn’t the right one. It happens every time you change the key’s Region or Protocol, or after you Rotate: the previous one stops working instantly. Copy again with Publish and replace the whole connection in Larix, not just a piece of it.

It connects for a few seconds and drops. Usually it’s a bitrate above what your network can take, not what the key can take. Halve the bitrate and climb back up slowly. If the problem is the network and not the encoder, go to Unstable bitrate.

You’re on RTMP and the picture freezes the moment you move. RTMP is the worst at handling packet loss. Switch the key to SRT in the dashboard, copy the new URL and create a new connection in Larix.
